How Busy GP Practices Can Mark Long Service Without a Big Ceremony

You do not need a hotel booking or a lengthy awards night to recognise long service. In a busy GP practice, the most meaningful thank-yous are often the ones that fit around a normal working day.

NHS trusts usually have formal long service schemes ready to go. Individual practices rarely do. That leaves practice managers juggling clinics, rotas and vacancies and still wanting to mark the years colleagues have given to patients and the team. The good news is that a clear, simple ritual works just as well as a large event.

Start with a short list of upcoming milestones. Note who is approaching 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 years or beyond — browse the full range of NHS long service badges — and pick a date that already exists in the diary: a team meeting, an away half-day, or the end of a busy week. Present the badge with a few genuine words about what that person brings. Cake and a card are optional; sincerity is not.

Staff notice when recognition is late or forgotten. They also notice when it arrives on time and feels personal. A quality hard-enamel long service badge they can wear on their uniform keeps the milestone visible long after the meeting ends. For small practices that only have a few anniversaries each year, ordering exactly what you need — one badge or several, with no minimum order — keeps the process light.

If an anniversary has already slipped past, it is still worth catching up. A delayed presentation is better than none. Typical delivery in two to three days means you can still mark something coming up next week — see our FAQs for more on ordering and delivery.

Long service recognition is not about ceremony for its own sake. It is about making sure dedicated people know their years of service were seen. That message travels quickly around a practice — and it helps build the kind of culture busy primary care teams rely on.
